In the current financial climate, many people are choosing to purchase fuel-efficient cars and trucks. The Honda Insight hybrid is recognized as the best choice efficiency wise because it receives 60 miles to the gallon with city driving and 66 miles to the gallon on the open road. The Insight's structure utilizes tires that are low resistant and takes advantage of the combined electric and gas capability. The problem with the Insight was the peculiar styling and seating for two, which was very cramped.

At least the most efficient mid-sized car, the Toyota Prius hybrid, is big enough to transport up to five people. With its blend of gas and electric power, the Prius creates 110 HP allowing it to be possible to drive up to 51 mpg on city streets and 48 mpg on the freeway. The smooth shape of the Prius permits it to be a bigger vehicle than the Insight. The most inexpensive American hybrid is apparently the Honda Civic which is an extremely efficient compact car that gets close to 50 mpg in both city and freeway driving. The Civic hybrid can be described as a leading contender in its class due to its improved design over the regular Civic as well as the 110 HP output.

With regards to efficient subcompact cars, the Volkswagen Beetle diesel is number one in that particular category. Despite the fact that 100 HP does not seem that remarkable, it has a torque of 177 lb-foot. Pontiac and Toyota combined for the most efficient station wagon found at 30 mpg in city travel and 36 mpg on the interstate. Vehicle manufacturers Toyota and General Motors worked together to manufacture the Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe. Most of the design and technology came from General Motors, but they both have engines coming from Toyota. The Matrix and Vibe have efficiency, refinement and smoothness, but they are not going to win any street race with their 1.8L 4 cylinder engine, that produces 126 HP.

For bigger cars the most proficient will be the Hyundai Sonata with the help of 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Because of the number of other first-rate competing cars, it was totally unexpected. It features a competent, responsive 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine. Its suspension can't manipulate as well due to its softness and emphasis on being comfortable. Even though it cannot really compare to a BMW, it is quite well built. Clearly the Hyundai has developed so much that it is no longer a manufacturer that is second-rate.

There are many fuel-efficient vehicles being developed today, giving a much greater choice for the drivers. Because lots more people would like to conserve energy, you don't have to be limited to only buying cars with a certain type of engine.
