Bifocal riding glasses are something that we have discussed before in this blog but it has usually been in a more tongue-in-cheek way. In all seriousness they are a necessary tool for some bike riders who have trouble seeing their instruments. One thing you need to make sure when you buy these bifocal riding glasses is that you are getting the correct strength or they may not be as effective when you are riding. So knowing what your riding position is, is very important.

For example, if you're riding a big Harley chopper with the tall handlebars your instruments are going to be pretty far away from your face. But if you were on a racing bike and were bent over the handlebars, then the instruments woule probably be very close to your face but you would not have to move your head in order to see them. Instead, you'll simply be glancing down as you ride. The strength of glasses that you need will all depend on how you view your instruments and where they are positioned.

How do you figure this out?

This can be done quite easily provided you have no problem making a fool of yourself for a minute or two. What you need to do is sit on your bike in a position that is similar to the position you are normally in when riding. Have one of your fellow bikers measure the distance from your eyes to the instruments using a tape measure.

It is also important to take note of whether you have to move your head in the instrument direction or if you just glance down at them usually. Finally, take a newspaper and head off to your local pharmacy with that friend who took your measurements.

In the pharmacy, there will be many different strengths of reading glasses that you can try on. You need to start with the weakest pair of glasses that you can find and then read the newspaper from the same distance that your friend measured and try to get the same position.

When you find the strength that gives you the clearest vision write that number down, go home and log onto the Online Biker Shop, and order the same strength of bifocal riding glasses. It's just that easy!
